New Facebook Privacy Tools

Facebook Announces New Privacy Tools

Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced two new privacy features at todays “live event.” These features are intended to improve our ability to manage your personal information on Facebook. The first is called “download my information” and allows you to do just what it says…download all information Facebook has compiled on you. This includes pictures, videos and everything else on Facebook’s servers.

Facebook has also devised a control panel for monitoring how “apps” use your information. Currently you already have control of what apps can get your info from the time you click on them via a dialog box, this handy little control panel will let you know what they are actually doing with that information an when they are accessing it. This dashboard control panel will also let you remove(or uninstall) apps directly.

On a side note, a new feature for groups like a “shared space” will add a new layer to the friends feature. It all sounds like good news on the Facebook front today.

Use Facebook for your social media needs, come see us at PGprint for your online printing needs!

Apple’s New Mac Pro

Introducing the New Mac Pro from Apple!

Apple has outdone themselves again, The new Mac Pro systems look extremely capable… and FAST! They have come up with a wide variety of processor option in the new Mac Pro. The options range from the Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processor (up to 3.2 GHz) machine all the way up to a 12 core machine using 2 6-core “Westmere” processors (up to 2.93GHz). With all the advancements in processor and ram Apple says this Mac Pro is up to 1.5x faster than the previous generation.

When it comes to standard graphics the new high-performance graphics cards from AMD make Mac Pro up to 5 times faster than ever before (graphics performance). The ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory comes standard. There is also an insane upgrade to the ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory, this card features a wider memory bus and higher-performance GPU (resulting in up to 70 percent faster performance compared with the ATI Radeon HD 5770).

Storage is off the chain as well, this is the first Mac Pro to offer Solid State Drives from the factory… nice. you get four 3.5 inch drive bays and can get up to 8TB of storage when configured with Serial ATA drives, Solid State drive are only available in a 512 GB flavor so you can only get up to 2 TB if you go that route(raid 0, 1, 5 and 0+1 are also available). They can also pop  in two Superdrives for multitasking purposes. Check out the chart on speed of Solid State (SSD) drives below.

Solid State Drive IO performance

The single processor 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” starts at $2499 and at the other end of the spectrum the Two 2.66GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” processor version starts at $4999. I was able to max one out at $19,847 but of course that with 12 cores, 32 GB or ram, 4 solid state drives and dual graphics cards and 2, yes 2 30″ Apple Cinema Displays.

Take a look at the Apple store, once you pick up a new HOT Mac Pro and start creating some great design work, bring it back here to up for some “Correct and on Time” printing!

Apple WWDC News

Fresh News from the Apple World Wide Developers Conference

Steve Jobs (Apple co-founder) was out on stage as a wave of huge applause washed through the room. He started with an update on the WWDC where there are 5200attendees from 57 countries. The conference sold out in eight days. He then stated “We apologize to folks who couldn’t be here… this is the biggest place we can get, so… anyway”. On to the nuts and bolts of the announcements. The iPad will now support PDF books as well, and he stated they are selling one every three seconds, over 2 million so far. Some nice changes to iBooks such as adding notes and bookmarks and the aforementioned PDF “bookcase”.

Now to the iPhone and big news, Netflix is adopting its iPad app over to the iPhone! No more waiting for chinese food surfing the web, and it will be free. They also have Mark Pincus from Zynga, they have ported over the bane of  Facebook (Farmville) and its available now (golf clap).

They also previewed the new iPhone, pretty amazing stuff,  “FaceTalk” Apple’s video call technology will only work on WiFi to start with. The new phone itself is an amazing piece of technology. Front and rear cameras (5M with led flash on the back side). Dual sound canceling microphones, The metal frame of the thing is actually the antenna. All stainless steel and glass surfaces and very sexy See Apple’s site here for a video preview. The screen has 2x the resolution of previous iPhones. 326 pixels per inch, wholesome goodness. Steve goes into a lot more on the technical side, which I won’t bore you with, but do have a look for yourself.

If you need some Printing done have a look at our main page! Looking for an iPad or iPhone? look at the Apple online store (link above!) or an Apple store location in you city if there os one!

Digital Copier Dangers

Personal and Corporate Security Risk from Digital Copiers

Most people have no idea how much of a security risk digital copiers are to personal data. CBS News recently produced a report (seen below) going into detail on the dangers of digital copiers and your personal information. It seems many companies don’t pull or demagnetize the hard drives before they sell them (or trade them in) as we do on our digital machines here at PGprint.com. The average criminal can download free forensic software program off the web and pull thousands of images off these these copiers. The amazing thing it that most people are unaware of the fact that hard drives store all the images scanned in. Hopefully as this becomes more common knowledge other companies will start to address these issues like we have by removing or demagnetizing the drives. Check out the video below.

Spotify Music Service Prepares for US Launch

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Spotify is a streaming music service that has done well in Europe. Subscribers have the ability to stream over 7 million songs from any computer with an internet connection. They have several options open to subscribers from Free ad-based to the premium ad-free. The big question is how will it fare in the US? Apple’s iTunes has grown amazingly fast since its conception, but it is not based on streaming nor does it require a full time connection to the internet. With that said Apple did just purchase the Music streaming service Lala, so they must think there is some money there.  Time will tell.

For more information just google Spotify, there is a wikipedia entry and more information all over the web

Olympic Update 2010

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Medal count! Currently the United States leads in Medals with 8 Gold, 12 Silver and 12 Bronze medals followed by Germany with 8, 11, 7 respectively.

One story that stood out to me so far in the Vancouver Olympics was of the German female biathlon team, typically 5 on a team and 4 compete in the relay. After winning 2 silver medals Magdalena Neuner of the German team decided to pull out and let Martina Beck have a run at a medal in the 4×6km relay. Beck was having coffee with her husband to fight of the frustration of not being able to compete. “And then Magdalena called me to tell me about her decision, and that she really wants me to have this occasion and really believes in my abilities. It was overwhelming.” She performed amazingly well and was in second in her leg of the race. They wound up taking the bronze medal in the event. So she had a day that went from Coffee Beans to Winter Olympic Bronze.  Kudos to team spririt! For more Olympic news see the official website at vancouver2010.com.

Google Buzz

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Google’s entry into the social networking arena is a few years late and almost incited a riot among their gmail users by setting up networks automatically based on email you send. So, that means the babysitter you sent a few emails to is automatically on your friends list and set up to “follow you”. People were not happy!

iPhone App helps save a life!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Man in Haiti survives quake by using iphone apps and a digital SLR camera… “But by using the focusing light on his camera and taking pictures, he was able to figure out where he was and where to go. And thanks to the iPhone first-aid app he’d downloaded, he knew how to fashion a bandage and tourniquet for his leg and to stop the bleeding from his head wound. The app also warned him not to fall asleep if he felt he was going into shock, so he set his cell phone’s alarm clock to go off every 20 minutes…” By Mike Celizic
