Gap Branding Takes a Turn for the Worse… or is it Masterful Marketing?
Gap re-designs their logo and posts it on their website announcing “here is our new logo” …already fishy to me! Typically with a brand this large you would have a lot more fanfare than a simple web posting announcing your new brand. The design community goes absolutely nuts over this “wanna be” logo that looks like some high schooler made it in Word in between studying for math and social studies, but any self respecting designer would never use Helvetica with a brand this large to begin with. So then the designers with blogs get going and the blogosphere is inundated with posts everywhere… can we say Free Advertising. Its genius really, if you think about it. At this point GAP posts on their facebook wall that they have heard the noise and are accepting suggestions, now they are getting hundreds of hours of Free Design Work! Absolutely incredible!
Pure Genius I tell you. I know if I were to design a logo for a brand that large it would not be Free! Seriously, lets look at all the free advertising, free design, and you know there will be a big hoopla over the new new logo… GAP makes the News/Blogs/etc yet again. I have to say I am clearly impressed with the person that came up with this scheme. Its not the first time I have seen social media used in this way but it is clearly the best! Masterful marketing I love to see.
