Steve Jobs Announces Leave of Absence

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, takes another leave of absence from the company for medical reasons.

It seems Jobs will be handing over day to day operations to Tim Cook who handled the reigns the Last time Jobs was out. Through an email sent to his staff, he said he would still remain CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company. The board of directors has granted him medical leave of absence to focus on his health.

It should be interesting to see what the stock does tomorrow when the markets open as they were closed today in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday today. Apple currently trades at over $300 a share and became the second most valuable company in the world at that landmark.

8 Million Dollar iPhone

Monday, November 1st, 2010

That’s a LOT of BLING in an iPhone…

The world’s most expensive phone with a total construction cost of £5 million (in the UK obviously), and it sells for around 8 million US. Designed by Stuart Hughes, the bezel is handmade using rose gold with approx 500 individual flawless diamonds which total over 100ct. the back of the case is formed using rose gold with the added touch of a diamond encrusted (53 of them!) Apple logo.

The main navigation button is made from platinum which holds a single cut 7.4ct pink diamond. Don’t like the pink navigation button diamond? You can replace it with a rare 8ct single cut Flawless white diamond. A little on the flashy side for my tastes but SOme of those fashionistas out there will love it!! The chest which houses this unique handset is made from a solid block of Granite lined with Nubuck top grain leather, which weighs in at a 7kg. The iPhone handset is the 32gb version and a limited edition of only 2 to be ever made. want to see more? Check out more pictures at StuartHughs.com

Is 8 million a bit out of your budget? How about some online printing at a much better rate? Check out our promotional specials at PGprint.

Apple App Store Changes – updated rules for iOS apps

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Apple Relaxes App Development Rules

Apple in the past has not allowed any third party tools that aid in app development. Specifically cross platform development tools (like Unity – a cross platfrom game engine) and any flash based (and converted) apps, the list went on. Apple has now backtracked and is going to allow the use of “tools” used to create iOS apps, with minor stipulations of course.

“In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need.”   ~Apple Press Release

Apple has also made public the review guidelines and censorship policy, which before was just an unknown. App Developers will now have a much clearer view of the guidelines they must meet for approval. Apple will still continue in its role as “mother” as far as censorship is concerned. They have released a statement to that effect and basic guidelines that are pretty open to interpretation.

In General I think these changes are a step in the right direction for Apple, it will open up the iOS platforms to some seriously fun games and unique apps on the horizon that had been stymied by Apple’s prior rules. For more information on this update on the app rules check out Engadget’s Review, its a nice overview which is very concise on the changes. Once you have read up and produce your mac-daddy app, come over to PGprint and print up some collateral materials for sales purposes!

Apple’s Updated iTouch

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Video calling and much more comes to the iTouch!

And some said… “but it’s not even a phone…” Apple’s “Face Time” does not work over your phone line but rather over the data link, that’s the reason they (iPhone and iTouch) require WiFi. Apple has also updated the camera to the HD model with built in editing capabilities. The iTouch also cameras on both sides of the phone as well (required for Face Time). The new screen of iPod touch is some serious technology. Apple engineers packed four times the number of pixels into the same size screen as earlier iPod touch models.  326 pixels per inch will make graphics and text look smooth and sweet at any size. These new features make the iPod touch an amazing piece of technology.

The new iPod nano has some great new features as well, upgraded specs. The new nano is 46 percent smaller, 42 percent lighter, and 100 percent  Multi-Touch! 1.5-inch color display with 240-by-240 pixel resolution and uses the same standard connector as the larger models and the iphone. I’m not sure how well multi touch will work on such a small screen if you have large fingers but we shall see about the real world tests as the product flys off the shelves.

Apple’s New Mac Pro

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Introducing the New Mac Pro from Apple!

Apple has outdone themselves again, The new Mac Pro systems look extremely capable… and FAST! They have come up with a wide variety of processor option in the new Mac Pro. The options range from the Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processor (up to 3.2 GHz) machine all the way up to a 12 core machine using 2 6-core “Westmere” processors (up to 2.93GHz). With all the advancements in processor and ram Apple says this Mac Pro is up to 1.5x faster than the previous generation.

When it comes to standard graphics the new high-performance graphics cards from AMD make Mac Pro up to 5 times faster than ever before (graphics performance). The ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory comes standard. There is also an insane upgrade to the ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory, this card features a wider memory bus and higher-performance GPU (resulting in up to 70 percent faster performance compared with the ATI Radeon HD 5770).

Storage is off the chain as well, this is the first Mac Pro to offer Solid State Drives from the factory… nice. you get four 3.5 inch drive bays and can get up to 8TB of storage when configured with Serial ATA drives, Solid State drive are only available in a 512 GB flavor so you can only get up to 2 TB if you go that route(raid 0, 1, 5 and 0+1 are also available). They can also pop  in two Superdrives for multitasking purposes. Check out the chart on speed of Solid State (SSD) drives below.

Solid State Drive IO performance

The single processor 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” starts at $2499 and at the other end of the spectrum the Two 2.66GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” processor version starts at $4999. I was able to max one out at $19,847 but of course that with 12 cores, 32 GB or ram, 4 solid state drives and dual graphics cards and 2, yes 2 30″ Apple Cinema Displays.

Take a look at the Apple store, once you pick up a new HOT Mac Pro and start creating some great design work, bring it back here to up for some “Correct and on Time” printing!

Apple iPhone 4 Update

Apple Loves Us! Thats what Steve Said!

You have to love Apples use of a YouTube video at the opening of the press conference on friday (July 16, 2010)…

Song A Day #561: The iPhone Antenna Song

I was amused, then Steve popped out to fill us in on the research his team had done and presented some examples of several other smart phones doing the same thing…. antennagate? surely not!

In a nutshell the info derived from this media love-in was that Apple has sold 3,000,000 in 3 months, and in the 22 days since some blogs/people raked apple across the coals and into the fire, they have had .55% of iPhone 4 users complain, yes a little over one half percent! Another titbit, return rate for the iPhone 4 is one third of the rate for the 3GS. Clearly a sign of something wrong (with the media)! Sure, I am a Fanboy as they call us (I still prefer mac evangelist) but I try to provide straight up talk and opinion on this blog. If you want to see the data yourself pop over to apple’s website and have a look yourself! July 16 press conference

Apple WWDC News

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Fresh News from the Apple World Wide Developers Conference

Steve Jobs (Apple co-founder) was out on stage as a wave of huge applause washed through the room. He started with an update on the WWDC where there are 5200attendees from 57 countries. The conference sold out in eight days. He then stated “We apologize to folks who couldn’t be here… this is the biggest place we can get, so… anyway”. On to the nuts and bolts of the announcements. The iPad will now support PDF books as well, and he stated they are selling one every three seconds, over 2 million so far. Some nice changes to iBooks such as adding notes and bookmarks and the aforementioned PDF “bookcase”.

Now to the iPhone and big news, Netflix is adopting its iPad app over to the iPhone! No more waiting for chinese food surfing the web, and it will be free. They also have Mark Pincus from Zynga, they have ported over the bane of  Facebook (Farmville) and its available now (golf clap).

They also previewed the new iPhone, pretty amazing stuff,  “FaceTalk” Apple’s video call technology will only work on WiFi to start with. The new phone itself is an amazing piece of technology. Front and rear cameras (5M with led flash on the back side). Dual sound canceling microphones, The metal frame of the thing is actually the antenna. All stainless steel and glass surfaces and very sexy See Apple’s site here for a video preview. The screen has 2x the resolution of previous iPhones. 326 pixels per inch, wholesome goodness. Steve goes into a lot more on the technical side, which I won’t bore you with, but do have a look for yourself.

iPhone App helps save a life!

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Man in Haiti survives quake by using iphone apps and a digital SLR camera… “But by using the focusing light on his camera and taking pictures, he was able to figure out where he was and where to go. And thanks to the iPhone first-aid app he’d downloaded, he knew how to fashion a bandage and tourniquet for his leg and to stop the bleeding from his head wound. The app also warned him not to fall asleep if he felt he was going into shock, so he set his cell phone’s alarm clock to go off every 20 minutes…” By Mike Celizic
