And some said… “but it’s not even a phone…” Apple’s “Face Time” does not work over your phone line but rather over the data link, that’s the reason they (iPhone and iTouch) require WiFi. Apple has also updated the camera to the HD model with built in editing capabilities. The iTouch also cameras on both sides of the phone as well (required for Face Time). The new screen of iPod touch is some serious technology. Apple engineers packed four times the number of pixels into the same size screen as earlier iPod touch models. 326 pixels per inch will make graphics and text look smooth and sweet at any size. These new features make the iPod touch an amazing piece of technology.
The new iPod nano has some great new features as well, upgraded specs. The new nano is 46 percent smaller, 42 percent lighter, and 100 percent Multi-Touch! 1.5-inch color display with 240-by-240 pixel resolution and uses the same standard connector as the larger models and the iphone. I’m not sure how well multi touch will work on such a small screen if you have large fingers but we shall see about the real world tests as the product flys off the shelves.
Apple Computer has applied for a patent that if accepted will block unauthorized hacks.
This time around Apple has actually put in many beneficial elements into this patent application. It covers many things that would make you want to applaud Apple, like blocking access to sensitive material (credit card, SSN, banking info), blocking unauthorized remote camera use, and the list goes on! Before you pat Apple on the back with a “Good Job” seems they do have some ulterior motives. Elsewhere in the wording it specifies detection of ”…any action that may indicate the electronic device is being tampered with by being, for example, hacked, jailbroken, or unlocked,…”

Apple has outdone themselves again, The new Mac Pro systems look extremely capable… and FAST! They have come up with a wide variety of processor option in the new Mac Pro. The options range from the Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processor (up to 3.2 GHz) machine all the way up to a 12 core machine using 2 6-core “Westmere” processors (up to 2.93GHz). With all the advancements in processor and ram Apple says this Mac Pro is up to 1.5x faster than the previous generation.
When it comes to standard graphics the new high-performance graphics cards from AMD make Mac Pro up to 5 times faster than ever before (graphics performance). The ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory comes standard. There is also an insane upgrade to the ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory, this card features a wider memory bus and higher-performance GPU (resulting in up to 70 percent faster performance compared with the ATI Radeon HD 5770).
Storage is off the chain as well, this is the first Mac Pro to offer Solid State Drives from the factory… nice. you get four 3.5 inch drive bays and can get up to 8TB of storage when configured with Serial ATA drives, Solid State drive are only available in a 512 GB flavor so you can only get up to 2 TB if you go that route(raid 0, 1, 5 and 0+1 are also available). They can also pop in two Superdrives for multitasking purposes. Check out the chart on speed of Solid State (SSD) drives below.
Solid State Drive IO performance
The single processor 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” starts at $2499 and at the other end of the spectrum the Two 2.66GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere” processor version starts at $4999. I was able to max one out at $19,847 but of course that with 12 cores, 32 GB or ram, 4 solid state drives and dual graphics cards and 2, yes 2 30″ Apple Cinema Displays.
Take a look at the Apple store, once you pick up a new HOT Mac Pro and start creating some great design work, bring it back here to up for some “Correct and on Time” printing!
The “AIGA, the professional association for design” which used to stand for “American Institute of Graphic Arts” a silly and confusing change in my opinion, but the site is still a wealth of information and inspiration for designers. I will hit on the areas of the site I think are most useful.
Inspiration - Over 20,000 designs from competitions are located in the Inspiration section of the web site, a great resource for those moments when you get a mental block. There are also some interesting “reads” in this area.
Professional Resources – This is one of my favorite resources as a designer, they have Standards of professional practice, and annual salary survey that can help when searching for that next shift in jobs or getting that overdue raise and various other freelance oriented resources.
There is also an education section and a business section that discusses ethics and spec work. AIGA also has the ubiquitous “green” section where sustainability, democracy and diveristy are king. This “Society and Nature” section also contains a good reference to a set of 50 symbols produced by AIGA and the U.S. Department of transportation back in 1974 that can be downloaded as eps or gif artwork free of charge!
As a designer you can spend quite a bit of time on the site the first time around and I am sure you will set some bookmarks. Student membership is $95 and individual membership starts at $230. Check out the site here
After you get done with all your research there, have your new inspiration in hand, and design complete, come back here and let allow us to provide you with a superior product! Christopher Robinson

I was amused, then Steve popped out to fill us in on the research his team had done and presented some examples of several other smart phones doing the same thing…. antennagate? surely not!
In a nutshell the info derived from this media love-in was that Apple has sold 3,000,000 in 3 months, and in the 22 days since some blogs/people raked apple across the coals and into the fire, they have had .55% of iPhone 4 users complain, yes a little over one half percent! Another titbit, return rate for the iPhone 4 is one third of the rate for the 3GS. Clearly a sign of something wrong (with the media)! Sure, I am a Fanboy as they call us (I still prefer mac evangelist) but I try to provide straight up talk and opinion on this blog. If you want to see the data yourself pop over to apple’s website and have a look yourself! July 16 press conference
When you are done there bring your printing over to us for an awesome deal on full color brochures!!

Apple’s new iOS is now ready for download and update.
I downloaded and installed the new OS update for the iPhone, Currently I am using a 3GS. The new software is running well and the graphic enhancements are very pleasing to the eye. The function of the new features is as expected. The unified inbox… Jury is still out, I will have to use it for a while to see if I like this feature (when checking 6 email accounts!) One thing to mention is that you must download the iBook app from the app store, it is free. I absolutely LOVE the folders. I am sure I will have to change the groupings and I was a little disappointed that you could only put 12 apps in each folder, more with a scroll function would have been nice. I also like the digital zoom and it preforms much better than most I have used on cameras in the past. I rate the update as a whole 5 out of 5 stars, Download it and enjoy! for more info go to Apple’s site HERE.

Apple’s Mac mini Receives the Editors Choice Award
PC Magazine’s Joel Santo Domingo says “With a new aluminum unibody chassis and a host of new components, the Apple Mac mini ($699 list) is the best little Mac on the market—maybe even the best mini PC… if you want a compact, quiet, powerful desktop for your den, bedroom, or living room: Get an Apple Mac mini with HDMI. It’s the compact nettop killer, and is finally the perfect PC for enjoying Internet programming and downloads.” The small form factor Mac received a rating of 4.5 out of 5 and the Editors Choice Award. (full review here)
My personal opinion of the old Mac mini was that it was an underpowered entry level mac that you couldnt do much in the way of graphics on. That is not the case with this new model. The new mini measures in at 1.4 height, 7.7 width, and 7.7 in depth (inches). The new unibody enclosure is produced out of a single block of aluminum with CNC machines. Apple got rid of the “brick” power supply (thank you Apple!) and squeezed in a few more ports on the back including a HDMI port! They also added an SD card slot and it contains 4 USB 2.0, firewire 800, gigabit ethernet, 802.11n wireless technology, bluetooth… the list goes on.
Storage and ram have been upgraded as well, the new mini can take up to a 500 Gig hard drive and also accepts up to 8 gigs of memory. The new NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics chip is twice as fast as previous model minis. To say the least, I was impressed. Pair it up with the new wireless keyboard and a wireless magic mouse and you have a wonderful little setup. Check out the full specs and see lots of pictures at the Apple Store site.
If you are on a hardware budget, and the iMac is still too pricey, consider one of these new mini machines. If your on a budget printing collateral material, come see our selection of products at extremely reasonable prices!
A little known company named Kno Inc. has produced an interesting device to compete in the school/education market segment. This beast is a dual screen tablet PC. Each screen is 14″ and it weighs in at 5.5 pounds. It is about an inch thick so it is comparable to a laptop but slap another monitor in where the keyboard would normally go. This little minx runs in Linux and the company calls it a “digital textbook platform” Pricing is set to be “under $1000″ which compared to the iPad seems a bit pricey, then again it does have two monitors. Check out the video below for more info, it is a prototype, so I am guessing the on screen demos may be simulated.
The Kno - A Dual Screen Tablet announced - Is it the iPad killer?
The new iPhone officially announced yesterday at the Apple WWDC is an amazing piece of electronics. The people I have spoken with so far are all amazed, as am I, that Apple could pull off something as advanced as much as this phone is. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next! here is the video on the new phone from Apple’s YouTube site.

We don’t sell iPhones but if you need brochures printed we can help you with that!
Fresh News from the Apple World Wide Developers Conference
Steve Jobs (Apple co-founder) was out on stage as a wave of huge applause washed through the room. He started with an update on the WWDC where there are 5200attendees from 57 countries. The conference sold out in eight days. He then stated “We apologize to folks who couldn’t be here… this is the biggest place we can get, so… anyway”. On to the nuts and bolts of the announcements. The iPad will now support PDF books as well, and he stated they are selling one every three seconds, over 2 million so far. Some nice changes to iBooks such as adding notes and bookmarks and the aforementioned PDF “bookcase”.
Now to the iPhone and big news, Netflix is adopting its iPad app over to the iPhone! No more waiting for chinese food surfing the web, and it will be free. They also have Mark Pincus from Zynga, they have ported over the bane of Facebook (Farmville) and its available now (golf clap).
They also previewed the new iPhone, pretty amazing stuff, ”FaceTalk” Apple’s video call technology will only work on WiFi to start with. The new phone itself is an amazing piece of technology. Front and rear cameras (5M with led flash on the back side). Dual sound canceling microphones, The metal frame of the thing is actually the antenna. All stainless steel and glass surfaces and very sexy See Apple’s site here for a video preview. The screen has 2x the resolution of previous iPhones. 326 pixels per inch, wholesome goodness. Steve goes into a lot more on the technical side, which I won’t bore you with, but do have a look for yourself.
