Excerpt from a press release on the HOW magzine site:
“NEW YORK–AIGA, the professional association for design, and F+W Media’s Design Community, which includes the brands Print, HOW and the I.D. Annual Design Review, have announced a major partnership called “Partners in Design Leadership.” The goal of this new partnership is to collaboratively advance the concept of design thinking, the relevance of design in problem solving and the leadership role designers play in our society.”
This should be an excellent team up and should really help drive creativity in the design community, I can’t wait to hear what develops out of it. For the full story check out the press release on HOW Magazines site here

As a designer working in print media, I am on a constant lookout for good sites to stir my creativity on those days where the layout just doesn’t come together as easily as it should. I ran across a few of these on a list of top ten design sites. I found many of them very useful, but edited the list a bit to match my own preferences and added in some very useful design tools that will be must haves for any Designer. Here we go!
Wausau Paper – digitalspace
Digitalspace is a great blog with lots of good info on Digital Printing and a nice tip section
Kali Ciesemier
Kali is an Illustrator with a very unique style, you have probably seen her work in AirTran’s GO magazine the above link is to her portfolio, nicely done, and here is a link to her Blog
id.interns
looking for a design intern? have 1-5 years experience and want to be an intern to get some experience?
Lisel Ashlock’s site
This is another great example of a site featuring portfolio blog and she even has a sshop set up through Etsy
Illustration Pages
This is a great blog with many contributors, one of the best all around illustration collaboration sites I have run across.
How magazine
This counts as more than one, there are several blogs at How’s site that are worth following so check them all out!
Identifont
Have a printed sample of a font but have no idea what it is? This great tool will guide you through a step by step identification process that is very accurate.
What The Font This is another favorite font identity site, you need a scanner for this one. First you upload a printed sample and it comes back with an answer very quickly if it can figure it out.
I’ll wrap this up with a few sites that go int color theory and meaning as a refresher for those of us that have been out of school for a while! Color Matters This site is basic and hits all the individual pieces of the color puzzle. Color Meaning A link to color meaning on About.com

Spotify is a streaming music service that has done well in Europe. Subscribers have the ability to stream over 7 million songs from any computer with an internet connection. They have several options open to subscribers from Free ad-based to the premium ad-free. The big question is how will it fare in the US? Apple’s iTunes has grown amazingly fast since its conception, but it is not based on streaming nor does it require a full time connection to the internet. With that said Apple did just purchase the Music streaming service Lala, so they must think there is some money there. Time will tell.
For more information just google Spotify, there is a wikipedia entry and more information all over the web

A program of the AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), The Winterhouse Writing Awards recognize excellence in writing about design. They have two types of awards for submitted writings, The Writing Award of $10,000 and the Education Award of $1,000
As it states on the website “The awards will be given for writing that demonstrates the greatest evidence of eloquence, analysis, perspective, insight and original thinking to further a public understanding of design in contemporary culture. Writing that advances the visual expression of a design program, argument or thesis is also eligible. Entries may address any design discipline or form, including, but not limited to: architectural, environmental, fashion, graphic, industrial, information, interactive, product and strategic.” For more information see the AIGA website

It is really a rather small growth rate, only 4.3%. The website “Inside Facebook” reports double digit growth in Indonesia, Phillipines, Germany, Mexico and India with total users estimated at 394 million by the end of the month. Amazing in my opinion.
In the USA alone Facebook users top the charts at over 112 million. Some of the more interesting points in the story are that of Russia, who has local competition and thus Facebook has never taken off there and China who blocks Facebook completely, to no ones surprise I’d imagine? For more information on this story check out the full story on InsideFacebook.
I will preface this post with my opinion that these designs are not true “logo designs” as the designer in each case was able to come up with a name AND image at the same time making the task mush easier. As Professionals in the real world will attest to, we rarely ever have that luxury. Add to the top of that most short concise names are already trademarked, and this really becomes just an exercise in design, but a good exercise and one we should all practice with in our free time to get us thinking “outside of the box” (as clients LOVE to say when they have no idea what they want!)
Here are a few samples from LogoPond. They use simplistic designs with a good usage of negative space.
A nice play on negative space with the spades on the plug creating the E
Subtle usage of the film holes shifted to create a face in profile
nice creation of a simlple reel graphic that also says fear
the positive/negative space created with the headboard and pillows creates a nice rendition of the same M in the logotext

With over 140,000 apps in the Apple Store weeding through the bulk to find the rare gems can be a daunting task. Today’s post is about the search for an App that works well as a remote for your computer. As the convergence of TV and the internet occurs this type of tiny app will make our lives much easier! For the purpose of this review we will only hit what I feel are the top two computer remotes.

HipporemotePro 2.0, compatible with Macintosh, Windows and Unix. This little gem acts not only as a trackpad and a keyboard but also has app profiles you can set up to control applications like Windows Media Center 7, Boxee, Hulu Desktop, your web browser, iTunes, and a lot more.

Remote Jr., basically this little puppy is a cross between a VNC app and a remote control. Most of the other apps I looked at only provided control via a wifi network, not so with the Remote Jr. It is capabl of connecting over GPRS/Edge or 3G. This means you can access your computer even when you are not at home!
