Now Amazon has done a great job of pioneering this… we’re going to stand on their shoulders for this. Our new app is called iBooks.” -Steve Jobs iBooks. e-books (like the kindle) and a new iBook store, will have best seller lists, 5 of the largest publishers in the world supporting them… poor Kindle. Sorry Amazon. (taps playing in the background) they have iWork running on the thing too! pretty amazing. iWork is apple’s version of office, a little simplified but very similar and easier to use. Spread sheets, presentations, etc.. Syncs via USB to a computer just like ipod or iphone. Wireless…wifi AND 3G! Optional Data plans for this device: 250 MB a month 14.99 unlimited 29.99 and through AT&T and throwing in their wifi hotspots. BOMBSHELL, not $999, but $499 at the entry level model (wifi only) so wifi models at $499, $599, $699 for 16,32,64 gig models Apple Event-Jan2010-03Wednesday, January 27th, 2010Pretty much showing off the capabilities. It will run iPhone apps with no problem and will pixel double up to run full screen in the iPad. App developers can upgrade apps to take advantage of the larger screen without too much trouble (so they say.) 10 hours on run time, over a month of standby. It connects to iTunes, plays movies, pictures, music, games, a large calendar app. They have the NY Times up now, looks good from images, but I’d like to see it in person. it has inline videos in the articles… It really could change the way people read newspapers and magazines. Now they are diving into brushes and such.. its a must see if you can get it to load or TWiT event video but its cutting in and out more to come at the end… Apple Event-Jan2010-02Wednesday, January 27th, 2010Apple Event-Jan2010-01Wednesday, January 27th, 2010Lots of speculation on the Event including Bob Dylan playing in the background, and a lot of Celebs in attendance… starting now. InDesign Video TutorialsTuesday, January 26th, 2010As I begin to traverse this long path of making InDesign help videos I realize that first I should look at what has been made already by Adobe itself, They do such a good job at providing basic assistance. Adobe has produced quite a few online tutorials that most may not be aware of. Adobe’s video tutorials This resource is truly a great place to start, I will be reviewing and creating our own tutorials to cover spots I think may need to be revisited, rehashed or that may not be covered in this list. PG Print video tutorials will also cover unique tips and tricks used by experienced designers and production experts that you may not find available on the web. Don’t forget to come back often, as we plan on having new video tutorials posted as often as possible usually one or two a week in different software packages. Christopher Robinson InDesign Tip: Transparency vs. TintMonday, January 25th, 2010In my time in this business I have found that many people are unsure of the difference between these two functions in InDesign. Typically the new users will have a tendency to use the Transparency function for everything. Several inquiries to the designers and marketing people creating these jobs revealed the reason why in most instances… they didn’t know about the tint function. This post and a video tutorial on the same subject will go into the differences. Tint should always be used to achieve a percentage of a color whenever possible. The Tint function allows you to adjust the value of the color while keeping the opacity at 100% so if you have headline type that crosses a photograph the photo will NOT show through the type. With Transparency you do not adjust the tint, you only adjust the opacity which can be hard to match at a later date and even harder to get to print without problems, especially with spot colors. The Tint function is located in the swatches palette in the upper right corner. If the effect you are after is transparency (or adjusting the opacity) then by all means use the transparency function! I hope this will help some of our valued clients be more aware of the correct way to set up tints in a file. Christopher Robinson Design TemplatesThursday, January 21st, 2010We here at Piedmont Graphics (PG Print) are in the process of creating a multitude of items to assist our customers. One thing on this list is design templates. The question we have deliberated is the value of these design templates to our customers. Would it be more of a benefit to create software tutorials on how to use these programs, or supply files, at a small cost, in the programs that customers can download, fill with copy, make a pdf and send back to us? “Stock Layouts” website [link] already fills this need rather well. For around $99 for a brochure and $39 for stationery you can have a professional looking design. The only drawback to any template from the web is that your competitor or even the dentist around the corner could be using that same design template. With all these points in mind our primary push over the next few months will be to create free InDesign Tutorials, free Illustrator tutorials, and free Photoshop tutorials. After we have created these free video tutorials we can then review creating a more cost effective and creative way of making templates available to our valued customers. If you have any comments or suggestions please feel free to contact us via email or the comments section! Keep an eye on our “Help” section for the addition of Free Video Tutorials coming soon!
